Lost your job? Tips to help you get started again

Losing a job is never easy, regardless of whether it has to do with your performance or not. It can take a toll on your mental health, your confidence, and your overall well-being.

At Ceek, we have spoken to many of our candidates about this, and from our experience, we’re here to give you some of the best tips we’ve given, received, and seen to help you find a new job...

Take some time

Sometimes, being unemployed is not all bad. We understand that financially, remaining so is difficult for most, but research shows that taking a small, productive break works wonders to help you recharge. Think of what your next step could be, but focus on the now, and don’t dwell on the what-ifs.

Stay in the game

We live in a fast-paced world that relies heavily on technology, and industry trends are no exception. Make sure you still keep yourself updated on what is happening around you – every industry has numerous resources like blogs and journals. Given that you are also freer time-wise, we would strongly encourage you to learn and grow by taking short courses. Any employer will ask about CV gaps in an interview, so make sure you have filled that gap productively.

Update your profile

From your LinkedIn page to your CV/cover letter, or personal portfolio including samples of your work, make sure everything has been revamped. This will help set you apart from the rest – you have the time, use it to invest in yourself and your future!

Network – a lot!

It is no secret that certain jobs are secured via networking – you’ll probably still have to go through an interview process, but skipping the selection criteria based on recommendations by your peers is priceless in today’s competitive job market. Virtual events and social media have made networking all that much easier, so take some time to reconnect with friends, ex-colleagues, old schoolmates…anyone – you never know who might help you on your journey!

Join a recruitment agency

We’re a bit biased with this one, but we genuinely believe that a recruiter will make all the above steps easier on you. Recruitment agencies narrow things down, help you find your perfect job, ensure culture fit, and network for you! They can also help you see things you may have overlooked, like venturing into a different industry. The possibilities are endless!

Be positive

Job seeking is not easy. Being unemployed and unable to find new employment can take a toll on you, but thinking good thoughts will make the process all that much easier.
