5 ways to develop your confidence at work

Confident people are not afraid to respond to new challenges, have positive body language, and feel happier at work.  Adopting the following habits can help increase your confidence at work and realise your true potential.

Everyone makes mistakes

Perfection is unattainable! Trying to be perfect all the time will leave you feeling inadequate. The truth is that EVERYONE makes mistakes. The trick is to turn your mistakes into valuable lessons.

Acknowledge your errors and ask yourself what went wrong. Then learn from it – plan and move forward. In 6 months’, you’ll look back and realise how far you’ve come and be much more confident in how far you can go.

Erase the negative talk

The body hears everything the mind says. The more you talk negatively to yourself, the more unhappy you appear. Criticizing yourself won’t make anything better.

Try praising yourself. Rudyard Kipling said, “Of all the liars in the world, sometimes the worst are our own fears.” Don’t let fear make you a victim of negative self-talk. Replace your imagined limitations with rational statements. Challenge self-attacks until your inner voice becomes an ally.

Trust your instincts

Not knowing everything—whether it’s because you’re new on the job or have incomplete information—can make you feel insecure and lead to a lack of confidence.

Mike Germano co-founder of Carrot Creative has some great advice on learning to trust your instincts:

  1. Commit yourself fully
  2. Immerse yourself in every aspect
  3. Remain flexible but trust your basic instincts
  4. Act on ideas you truly care about

By fully immersing yourself in what you are passionate about and committing whole-heartedly, you will begin to trust your instincts. Keep learning and remain flexible but learn to trust in your basic instincts. This will give you more confidence in ideas you feel strongly about and enable you to act on them.

Practice makes perfect

As the saying goes ‘Practice makes perfect’ but the simple truth is ‘The harder you work, the better you get.’ Self-discipline is the key. The most successful people in the world have a routine of positive habits that empower them.

When you build great habits, you build confidence. Think about how you can incorporate healthy habits into your daily schedule. Choose habits that will increase your stamina and personal development. This will, in turn, boost your confidence levels and give you that ‘I can conquer the world feeling.'

Acknowledge your achievements

Finally, remember to acknowledge your accomplishments. This is so important. Even celebrating your successes in a small way, will increase positive feelings such as happiness, self-respect, and confidence.

Make a weekly well-done list. Write down all the things that went well and feel good about these things. Do this every Monday so you can reflect on your progress before starting a new week.
