Does working remotely really work?

Working remotely is catching on as people of all ages and professions become more nomadic and aware of the benefits of choosing a place to live that fits their personal needs and preferences best.

As millennials entered the workforce, with generation Z following hot on their heels, they brought the expectation that people should have the ability and freedom to work remotely and not be confined to an office setting or desk.

Benefits of working remotely

Let’s face it, being able to work from your sofa in your PJs really cannot be understated. The same goes for working from a tropical beach, local coffee shop or at a favourite co-working hub. Your internal clock benefits too. If you do your best work late at night or early in the morning rather than during a standard 9 to 5 job, both options are doable with a more flexible remote work policy.

Employees who work remotely will also save time and money on their commute, redefine their work schedules for maximum productivity, and add some much-needed flexibility to their workday. This flexibility enables them to attend school and other appointments, cook healthy meals, exercise, and spend more time with their families.

What’s in it for the employer?

Global organizations are changing too, with many well-known companies adopting remote working ways. Offering a remote working environment results in a much larger talent pool. It also increases employee engagement and productivity. The advancements in video conferencing or screen sharing technologies and internet speed, paired with tools that allow for efficient collaboration like Slack (communication), and Toggl (time tracking) has also made managing remote employees easier.

For a lot of organizations, an easy way to reduce turnover is to allow people to work remotely to achieve a better work-life balance. Not only that, it means employers can select from the best talent pool no matter where it may be located and benefit from happier employees who are trying to achieve a more balanced work-life approach.

Keep a balance

Before jumping onto the proverbial bandwagon and buying a one-way ticket to anywhere, do consider the following. Working remotely depends almost entirely on having the right tools for the job. This means having the right technology to allow efficient communication with colleagues or team members and to centralize important updates. Using the right tools will make things a lot easier for you and the people you work with.

And even with the right tools, there’s still the chance of missing out on the impromptu discussions, important whiteboarding sessions, and informal chats that an office makes possible. Working from home can also be extremely distracting. So can a coffee shop, or for that matter, that beach. Which is why you’ll need to introduce some sort of team schedule
